Converted shipping container named Londonʼs best office extension

Gundry & Ducker Architects, Carl Turner Architects and Ashton Porter Architects have scooped the top accolades in the NLA’s third annual Donʼt Move, Improve! competition
Carl Turner Architects’ won the award for the Best Office Extension or Refurbishment for the Magnificent Container at Hackney City Farm, a £7,000 multi-purpose space created from a converted shipping container, for a non-profit organisation.
Meanwhile Gundry & Ducker’s Dove House, a larch-clad extension to a Victorian terraced house in Wandsworth, and Ashton Porter Architects’ Suburbanstudio, a garden studio in Enfield, were named as joint winners in the Home Extension or Refurbishment category.
Emerging practice Fraher Architects’ Jewel House, which is also shortlisted for the AJ Small Projects Award, was named as a runner-up in the Home Extension or Refurbishment category.
Peter Murray, Chairman of the jury, said:’“This yearʼs Donʼt Move, Improve! winners and shortlist illustrate the benefits of well-designed home extensions and promote the involvement of architects in the process. In these difficult economic times, renewal and refurbishment play an increasingly important part in the renewal of the city. Too many small buildings are erected without a designer; the projects on display here demonstrate a heartening range of solutions to create more space at a variety of budgets.’
The winners and all 72 shortlisted schemes are on display at the NLA galleries at The Building Centre, until Wednesday 28 March
